How to Watch YouTube While Using Other Apps on Your Phone

Sometimes, you may want to watch a video on YouTube while using other apps on your phone, such as replying to messages, browsing social media, or working on other tasks. However, YouTube typically stops playing the video when you switch to another app. Fortunately, there are several ways to keep the video playing while multitasking on your mobile device. Here are some methods you can try to continue watching YouTube videos without interrupting your other activities.

1. Using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) Mode on Android

The Picture-in-Picture (PiP) feature allows YouTube videos to continue playing in a small, floating window while you use other apps. This feature is available on most Android devices running Android 8.0 (Oreo) or later.

Steps to Use PiP on Android:

  1. Open the YouTube app and play the video you want to watch.
  2. Press the Home button (usually the house-shaped button or swipe up to go to the home screen).
  3. After you return to the home screen, the video will continue playing in PiP mode, which allows it to stay in a small, floating window.
  4. You can drag the PiP window around the screen and open other apps, such as WhatsApp, Instagram, or others.

Note:

  • PiP mode is available for YouTube app users with a YouTube Premium subscription or for users watching videos on YouTube through a browser on some devices.
  • If you're not subscribed to YouTube Premium, make sure you're using a device that supports PiP and have the latest version of the YouTube app installed.

2. Using a Browser to Play YouTube Videos (Desktop Mode)

If you don’t have YouTube Premium or PiP isn’t available, you can use a mobile browser to play YouTube videos while using other apps.

Steps to Use a Browser:

  1. Open a browser on your phone (such as Google Chrome, Firefox, or others).

  2. Go to the YouTube website (www.youtube.com) and find the video you want to watch.
  3. Enable Desktop Mode in your browser. In Chrome, tap the three dots in the top-right corner and select "Request Desktop Site."
  4. Play the video, then press the home button. The video will continue playing in the background even when you switch to other apps.

3. Using Third-Party Apps

There are several third-party apps that allow you to watch YouTube videos in the background or in PiP mode without needing a YouTube Premium subscription. These apps can help you continue watching YouTube videos while using other apps.

Some examples of third-party apps you can try include:

  • Float Tube (for Android): This app allows YouTube videos to play in a floating window.
  • YouTube Vanced (for Android): A modified version of the YouTube app that lets you watch videos without ads and with PiP mode enabled for free.

Note:

  • Be cautious when using modified apps like YouTube Vanced, as they may pose security risks and violate YouTube's terms of service. Make sure you understand the potential risks before downloading such apps.
