YouTube Launches "Jewels" Feature to Support Creators in Live Streams

Google’s streaming platform, YouTube, has introduced a new feature called Jewels, which allows users to show support or give virtual gifts to creators during live streams in vertical format. Previously, YouTube offered features like Super Chat and Super Stickers, which allowed users to contribute to creators globally, including in Indonesia. With the introduction of Jewels, YouTube provides users with an additional way to show appreciation, similar to the coin system used on TikTok.

Through the Jewels feature, users can purchase Jewel bundles and send them to creators during live streams. Additionally, Jewel can be used to buy stickers, which can also be gifted to creators as a form of support. This feature offers greater flexibility for users looking to express their appreciation to their favorite creators.

According to Jensen from the YouTube team, as cited in Google’s Support page, every Jewel sent to creators will be converted into "Ruby," valued at 1 cent in U.S. dollars. Therefore, every 100 Ruby points received by a creator equates to 1 dollar. However, YouTube has not yet disclosed the specific revenue-sharing model or commission structure for the Jewels feature. This differs from the fixed pricing and revenue-sharing setup for Super Chat and Super Stickers, where YouTube takes a 30% cut and creators receive 70% of the earnings.

Currently, the Jewels feature is only available to eligible creators in the United States who are part of the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).

YouTube Users in Indonesia Still Await Jewels Feature

While the Jewels feature is not yet available in Indonesia, creators in the country can still utilize other monetization options, such as Super Chat and Super Stickers, which are available to all YouTube users. These features allow users to contribute financially to creators by purchasing messages or stickers during live streams.

To activate Super Chat and Super Stickers, creators must meet several eligibility requirements, such as having over 1,000 subscribers, 4,000 hours of valid public watch time in the last 12 months, and residing in a country supported by the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Creators also need to have an AdSense account linked to their YouTube channel.

Creators who want to enable these features can do so by logging into YouTube Studio and following a few simple steps: first, go to studio.YouTube.com, click on the Monetization tab, then select the Supers option from the monetization dashboard. After completing the setup, creators can start using Super Chat and Super Stickers for their live streaming content.

At present, YouTube offers several monetization options in Indonesia, including YouTube Ads, YouTube Premium, Channel Memberships, and YouTube Shorts Fund. With the addition of Super Chat and Super Stickers, creators now have six different monetization tools available. YouTube also plans to introduce a new feature called Super Thanks, which will be launched in Indonesia at a later date.
