Video Podcast Creators on Spotify Can Now Start Earning
Spotify is taking significant strides in expanding its video content offerings, including both music and podcasts. In a major move to further this development, the streaming platform has launched a new initiative called the Spotify Partner Program. This program is similar to YouTube’s Partner Program (YPP), allowing creators to monetize both video and audio content uploaded to the platform.
Through the Spotify Partner Program, creators can earn revenue from two main sources. The first is premium video revenue, which means creators will get paid based on the number of paying Spotify users (Spotify Premium subscribers) who watch their video podcast content. This feature will be available starting January 2, 2025, though it will initially be accessible only in select countries: the US, UK, Canada, and Australia.
In addition, creators can also earn revenue from advertising income. According to Spotify’s support page, creators in this program will receive 50% of the advertising revenue generated from ads shown on their videos. To earn ad revenue, creators must insert ad breaks into each episode they create. Spotify will then run targeted ads both on videos played directly on Spotify and those downloaded by users on other podcast platforms.
What's particularly interesting is that this monetization isn't limited to streaming on Spotify alone. Creators will also earn income if their content is downloaded or played on other podcast platforms.
Requirements for Joining the Spotify Partner Program
To qualify for the Spotify Partner Program, creators must meet several criteria. These include:
- Hosting their show via Spotify for Creators.
- Residing in one of the countries where the program is available (US, UK, Canada, or Australia).
- Releasing at least 12 episodes.
- Reaching a minimum of 10,000 hours of consumption in the last 30 days, along with 2,000 active listeners during the same period.
At this point, there is no confirmed date for when the program will be available in other countries, including Indonesia.
Growing Video Content on Spotify
Spotify’s push into video content is showing promising results. Since launching video podcast formats in 2022, the platform has seen a significant surge in video consumption. The number of creators uploading video podcasts to Spotify has now exceeded 300,000, up from 250,000 at the end of June 2024. According to Spotify spokesperson Grey Munford, video consumption is growing faster than audio-only consumption, highlighting the increasing demand for video content among Spotify users.
With these developments, Spotify is positioning itself as a major player in the video content space, offering creators new opportunities to monetize their content and engage with audiences in innovative ways.
