When Does Stranger Things Season 5 Start Filming?

Filming for Stranger Things Season 5 is already in progress! As of January 8, 2024, the production has officially resumed, and by July 15 — the eighth anniversary of Stranger Things Season 1 — filming for the final season had already reached the halfway mark. In a newly released video, fans can see familiar faces from Hawkins (and a few new ones!) on set as they film the final chapter of the series.

Sadie Sink (who plays Max) shares in the video, "We're really savoring every moment." Jamie Campbell Bower (Vecna) is back in his iconic hair and makeup chair, teasing, "Season 4 was big, but Season 5 definitely feels bigger." Finn Wolfhard (Mike) reveals that he's especially excited to shoot scenes with "the original four" — Will (Noah Schnapp), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), and Mike (Wolfhard), now that Will has returned to Hawkins at the end of Season 4. However, as McLaughlin adds, "Like every season, you never know what to expect."

Are There Any New Cast Members in Stranger Things Season 5?

Yes! Nell Fisher, Jake Connelly, and Alex Breaux will be joining the cast of Stranger Things Season 5. Additionally, Linda Hamilton (known for The Terminator, Children of the Corn, and Chuck) confirmed at 2023's Tudum: A Global Fan Event that she will appear in the final season. Details about her character are still under wraps, but Hamilton has expressed her excitement about joining the show. "I don't know how to be both a fangirl and an actress at the same time," she said in her announcement video. "I'm going to work on that."

What Will Stranger Things Season 5 Be About?

Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer previously shared that they wrote a 25-page mythology document for Netflix back during Season 1, which explored the lore and mysteries of the Upside Down. "We knew a bit about what was going on in the Upside Down, but we wanted it to remain unknowable, mysterious," Matt Duffer explained. "But they asked us to write it all down, so we did."

While the audience learned a lot about the Upside Down in Season 4, there's still much more to be revealed in Season 5. Ross Duffer mentioned during Geeked Week in June 2022, "Some of the unanswered questions from that document will be addressed in Season 5." These revelations will play a crucial role in shaping the plot of the final season.
