DeepSeek Banned in Many Countries, Here's the Stance of the Indonesian Government!
Several countries have banned the use of DeepSeek, especially in workplaces. So, what is the stance of the Indonesian government on this global issue?
For your information, DeepSeek is a Chinese startup that develops AI technology with capabilities surpassing those of Nvidia and OpenAI. However, there are concerns regarding potential cybersecurity risks for users of DeepSeek.
No Discussion Yet on Banning DeepSeek
In response to DeepSeek, the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Communication and Digital, Ismail, shared his comments during the opening event of the 6 GHz frequency band for WiFi 6E and WiFi 7.
“We have not had any discussions on this (the ban on DeepSeek in Indonesia),” said Ismail in Jakarta, Friday (7/2/2025).
Previously, the Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, also commented on the DeepSeek phenomenon. She stated that the government has not made any decision to restrict public access to the AI technology developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese company.
For those using AI, Meutya urged users to follow the guidelines outlined in the Ministry of Communication and Digital circular regarding the use of AI technology and to comply with the applicable laws and regulations.
“Such as the Information and Electronic Transactions Law (UU ITE) and the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP), which regulate the restriction of negative content such as gambling and pornography, as well as creating a child-friendly digital space,” explained Meutya Hafid.
DeepSeek Banned in Various Countries
The Australian Department of Home Affairs announced that DeepSeek would be banned from all federal government devices due to national security concerns, although the specific reasons were not disclosed. According to advice from the country’s intelligence agencies, the use of DeepSeek is considered to pose a threat to national security.
Minister Tony Burke explained that this decision was not made because DeepSeek originates from China, but because of the risks to the Australian government and its assets. He stated that the Anthony Albanese government acted swiftly to protect national security and Australia’s interests.
Italy, Taiwan, and several U.S. government agencies have also imposed bans on DeepSeek. The main concern reported is the potential data leakage to the Chinese government.
According to DeepSeek's privacy policy, the company stores all user data in China, where local laws require organizations to share data with intelligence officials upon request.
For instance, NASA has prohibited its employees from using DeepSeek technology. A memo from the head of the agency's AI division informed staff that DeepSeek's servers operate outside the U.S., raising concerns about national security.
